Edgefest 2001 (Dallas, Tx)

Before I start my review I would like to take a minute to let everyone know that this is my opinion. Feel free to add on what you liked or disliked about the show.

Two words... Edgefest sucked. I think the worst part was the sound. It seemed that whoever was working the soundboards had no idea what they were doing. The whole time I kept picturing a soundboard with a chimp sitting behind it playing with everything. It really made all the bands sound like total crap.

Anyway, here is my breakdown of the bands on the main stage. The first band to perform was a band called "Alien Ant Farm." Who the hell are these guys??? I have never heard of them before. They called themselves a "baby band." Supposedly these guys have just started touring, and their CD was released 5 or 6 weeks ago. I did not like them at all.

Next up I believe was Dollybraid. I must say that the only Dollybraid song I have heard is "Broken Like and Angel." I had never seen them live before, but I was impressed, especially when they pulled out Rage Against The Machine's "Bombtrack." I really like these guys now. It's just a shame that the sound was so horrid.

The third band was Dexter Freebish. They seemed to stimulate all the adolescent girls in the crowd. They were "OK." Don't feel compelled to see them again though.

Fourth was Orgy. I was so psyched about getting to see them. Their set lasted a whole 30 minutes!!! That's all. You'd think that a band like Orgy would get some recognition and be able to play for a while. I believe that there were only six of their songs total! They were excellent though, really good stage presence. I just wish they had gotten more time.

Hrm... who else to play at Edgefest but Oleander. Jeez, it seems like these guys are a local band or something, every time I turn around they are playing here. Not that I have anything against it though. Well, it was interesting; I would venture to say that they were alot better at Edgefest last year. The songs from their new CD were great. I believe that maybe they are getting tired of the old songs like "Stupid" and "Why I'm Here." They just didn't have the energy.

Next was Lifehouse. I was indifferent to their performance. I have only heard "Hanging by a Moment." It's a good song and was played well on stage. I don't have very much to say about them. I am thinking that they are another band that preys on adolescent girls though, they all went nuts and knew every word to each song.

Now you will understand why I said that this review is my opinion. Weezer, I have never liked them. I have never seen so many people rush the stage at once in my life! There were high schoolers everywhere. I was thinking to myself "Jeez, I hate Weezer." For some reason though after a few songs I was pulled in. During "My Name is Jonas" I caught myself singing and having a good time. It was quickly destroyed though. I was watching the drummer, and one of his sticks broke. While he was fumbling for another one, there were still cymbal crashes. Odd eh? I thought so.

After that I was so disappointed that we just left. I said screw "The Cult" and "Fuel." Fuel was the band that I wanted to see, but not in that environment. I am going to wait until they come back to town and maybe it will be at a better venue. So if anyone has any comments about the last two bands post a follow up.

Well, I just keep thinking about Ozzfest, hopefully that will be better. I guess we will have to wait and see. I'll be sure to give you guys a review of that one.
