Well well well... I think this should be called "Not Another Soundtrack In Which Bands Cover 80's Songs." There are a few good covers here, but it's not worth buying... as I would imagine is the same with seeing the movie. Honestly, does anyone really want to see another damn parody? I sure don't. Ok, back to the soundtrack. Here is the track list:
- Marylin Manson - Tainted Love: This is really not a bad song, I think he/they did a damn good job. I have been listening to this track for a few weeks now though. I remember when he covered "Suicide is Painless," you know... the theme song from MASH. I believe it was for the "Blair Witch 2," but I'm not sure. Marylin Manson always goes all out with the covers though, I gotta respect that.
- Smashing Pumpkins - Never Let Me Down Again: Jesus! They really screwed this good ol' Depeche Mode song up. It was cool back in the day, but this is CRAP!
- Orgy - Blue Monday: Great job... too bad the cover is like what? 3 or 4 years old now I believe. If you haven't heard it, I don't know what rock you've been living under, but you need to get out more.
- System of a Down - The Metro: I don't think that this is an 80's cover. Is there one SOAD song that they don't do a MAJOR tempo change in? I don't think that I have ever heard one. This is not a good track, honestly... it's just plain stupid.
- Scott Weiland - But Not Tonight: Another Depeche Mode cover. I do like Scott Weiland, even though I think that he should stick with the rest of Stone Temple Pilots. Remember that song that he did for the "Great Expectations" soundtrack? That was just a horrible song. I do have to say that I think that this is a good cover though.
- Saliva - Message of Love: This is Pretenders song. The cover confuses the hell out of me though... I mean, Saliva??? What the hell happened to kick ass songs like "Your Disease" and "Superstar?" Those are excellent songs. Somehow this just does not fit with the Saliva that I know.
- Stabbing Westward - Bizzare Love Triangle: I saw this track and I got EXTREMELY excited. This just happens to be my favorite 80's song... and I love Stabbing Westward. I will probably cry myself to sleep later though. This is the biggest disappointment since Christmas last year! I wanted a Real Doll to smack around, but I didn't get it. Bah! Who cares. I probably could have covered this song better by playing armpit fart sounds.
- Goldfinger - 99 Red Balloons: Another great 80's song, even though I prefer the German version better. Goldfinger did a good job too... nice and punky, hellz yeah! I have heard of these guys before, never listened to their music... now I'm leaning towards checking the band out.
- Mest - I Melt With You: I guess they saved the good "original" 80's songs for last because Modern English kicks much ass also. Mest however comes extremely close to doing a good job. They even got some old skool sounding synths going on. I enjoy listening to this song.
- Good Charlotte - If You Leave: This is a semi-good cover also. I mean, nobody can do it better than OMD. This cover is good up until the chorus then the song starts to depreciate.
Whoa, I just looked at the TV... Flickerstick's "Beautiful" video is on VH1. I hope Flickerstick makes it, they have great songs and they are nifty guys. Sorry, I just needed to interject that.
- Muse - Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want: I never really cared much for the original by "The Smiths." This is better than the original, but still is not good enough to listen to.
- Phantom Planet - Somebody's Baby: These guy's didn't do half bad on this cover, I have never heard of the band before. I remember listening to Pat Benetar when I was little, I always liked this song. I think I could handle listening to the cover as well.
So... I would say that it seems this album is about a 50/50. Some of the songs are pretty good, however... the ones that suck, REALLY suck. I wouldn't buy it for the simple fact that Stabbing Westward hosed my favorite 80's track. Do what you will, I'm not really going to tell you which way to go with this soundtrack, just do me a favor and DON'T go see this stupid ass looking flick. By the way... did they Wayans brothers happen to have anything to do with this? I wonder when Scary Movie 3 is going to come out... yes my friends the apocalypse is upon us. Next thing you know they are going to start remaking movies all over again... you know good stuff from back in the day. Oh wait, "Ocean's Eleven." What happened to America's creativity?
