Have you ever really worked hard to get with some bird only to come home and find her shagging some other bloke in your bed? After several months of waiting patiently the new Thrice album left me with a similar feeling in my heart. While not entirely a bad album, the third full length release is mediocre at best. The Artist In The Ambulance for the most part is 45 minutes of pure redundancy. Each one of the songs sounds almost identical to the last and the lines dividing them are almost non-existent. If it wasn't for the counter on my cd player I wouldn't have known when the first track ended and a new one began.
Out of the twelve tracks on the cd, while not necessarily good, only six were worthy of comments:
01 - Cold Cash And Colder Hearts
I found this a rather weak opening in comparison to the last two albums. After the hard opening it slowed down quite a bit and seemed to mirror Trust.
02 - Under A Killing Moon
This was released a few months ago along with All That's Left on Thrice's website. I liked the song when I first heard it by itself, but after listening to the entire cd it seemed to get rather old.
03 - All That's Left
Lyrically it was great, but that's all that was good about it. The harmonizing became rather annoying towards the end of the song.
04 - Silhouette
I was actually confused about half way through this song. There were points where I thought I was listening to CKY and not Thrice.
06 - Paper Tigers
I think this was originally called Under A Killing Moon and placed at track 2.
10 - The Artist In The Ambulance
I really liked this song. I was expecting more of the same right before it started but was pleasantly suprised to hear something unlike anything the band had ever recorded before.
For the most part you'd get the same thing by listening to The Illusion Of Safety with Deadbolt on repeat. If you're out record shopping grab the new Poison The Well, You Come Before You, or pick up the other Thrice albums if you don't already have them.
