My Music, My Music...My Music & Me!

Have you ever woken from a long nights sleep with some obscured bass line stuck in your head? Maybe a drum riff? God, I hate it when that happens...

Fortunately for me, the only kind of random melody parts that I get lodged in ye olde noggin' are from songs I've listened to relatively recently (six months or less), which makes it infinitely easier to narrow down what the hell it is that I can't shake from my brain. Why do I mention this? Well, mostly because I haven't reviewed anything at all lately, and it has a lot to do with the fact that lyrics have, by and large, begun to wear on me.

I've found myself shying away from anything with words (unless you can really call anything Liars do intelligible) primarily because it's the words that send me into a tail-spin. Given that I've been treading dangerously close to Depressionville, USA over the past couple of months, my natural inclination (defense mechanism) was to reject harmony and embrace all things instrumental.

The problem? I have no formal training in music theory, and have difficulty deciphering moods and motifs and such when it comes to pieces that are exclusively based upon instrumentation of one sort or another. I mean, I really like the new Mogwai album, but my attempt to review it left me with hours of blank stares and false-starts. I sound like an ignorant ass anyway, I didn't want to push my luck too far.

Sorry 'bout that. I'm edging myself back into stuff with lyrics now, and hope to be back on form in short order. I think the first thing that I'll try to get done is a recap of the Alkaline Trio/Against Me! show from a couple of weeks ago. So be on the look out for that. I'm working on a second round of the Mixtape series, and have hopes that I'll attract better responses (more of them, really) than last time. I'm also revisiting some of the ideas that I've had in the past, but never really invested much time in.
